National Water Management Plan Is Now in Effect

In 2020, 16 key action plans shaping the agricultural agenda were announced to the public.

Last November, the 3rd Agriculture and Forestry Council was held at ATO Congresium, where comprehensive evaluations regarding the future of the sector were carried out. The council’s final declaration was officially shared by Turkey’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Bekir Pakdemirli. Following this announcement, the Agriculture and Forestry Council Action Plan was presented to national and international stakeholders.

Özer Matlı, Chairman of the Board of Bursa Commodity Exchange and member of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, stated that the main topics addressed at the council were consolidated under 8 major themes as: “Security of supply in agricultural production, food reliability, rural development and marketing, fisheries and aquaculture, soil and water resources, biodiversity, climate change, forest assets, and institutional sector capacity”, and provided the following assessment about the process;

“The 60 strategic actions highlighted during the 3rd Agriculture and Forestry Council were transformed into 38 main headings through the Ministry’s extensive planning and analytical studies. In connection with these headings, 333 sub-actions are aimed to be implemented according to the determined timeline. The 5-year implementation program resulting from the council is expected to serve as a strong reference covering Turkey’s 25-year agricultural development projection.

Among the action plan items; well-structured steps in essential areas such as building brand value for agricultural products, domestic certified seed development, licensed warehousing, sustainable family farming models, and national water management strategies will carry the country's agriculture far beyond its current position.”
